Neato Robotics Vacuums - Recent Questions, Troubleshooting & Support

Hi Guys I've fully dismantled my Neato XV-21 to locate the source of the "can't see" problem. (And also replaced a tight wheel Motor causing a "something is caught in my right wheel" message) There several screws underneath the Neato XV-21 that must be undone to allow the top to be separated. A bit of a pain just to get into the visual sensor area. But not too hard with an electric screwdriver. There is a Laser device & a Photo sensor mounted to a black plastic rotating wheel which is covered by a black cap with 2 holes in it. One hole for laser beam to exit & one to pick up return laser light return data. They are both rotated by a motor & pulley via a rubber "o" ring which could slip, break or get hairs caught in it. These could be the source of problems. Once mine was cleaned & checked I had no more problems. Then the wheel motor got tight. Replacing the motor fixed the problem. This requires hoping the Motor Gear Box assembly out by poping the pivot shaft out of it's plastic holder. Then disconnect the spring & cable connector. But you bust be prepared to carefully remove the magnet off the motor shaft (vice & 2 flat blade screw drivers) then unsolder the small PCB at 2 points. With practice (twice) I can now replace a motor in 20-30 minutes. Nah, there's no diaphragm you can just yank out to fix it - that stop/start sucking is usually the machine protecting itself or getting blocked. The Rug Doctor Pro has a few common choke points that cause exactly what you're describing: sucks for ?1 min, then dies. *Check these 4 things first - 90% of the time it's one of them:* *1. Float shut-off triggered* Inside the dirty water tank there's a plastic float ball. When water gets too high or foams up, the float rises and blocks suction so you don't flood the motor. - *Fix*: Empty the tank even if it looks half full. If you used too much soap, foam trips it early. Add 1 cap of defoamer or a splash of white vinegar to the dirty tank to kill foam. *2. Clogged hose or dome filter* The machine will run, then overheat/clog and suction cuts out. - *Fix*: - Take the dome lid off the dirty tank. Under it is a foam filter/screen - rinse it clean. - Disconnect the hose from the machine and drop a coin through. If it doesn't fall out the other end, you've got a clog. Flush with hot water or use a broom handle to push it out. - Check the clear nozzle at the floor tool for hair/gunk. *3. Motor overheating ? thermal cut-off* Rug Doctors have a thermal switch. If you pull it, you'll suck water straight into the motor and kill it. $200 mistake. *Quick test to isolate it:* 1. Empty both tanks. 2. Take the hose off the front of the machine. 3. Turn it on and put your hand over the circular vacuum port where the hose connects. - *Strong suction that stays on* = your hose/floor tool is clogged. - *Still cuts out after 1 min* = internal clog or motor issue. If you've cleaned everything and it still cuts out, the motor or thermal switch is likely going bad. Rug Doctor's parts diagram doesn't list a user-serviceable diaphragm. Try the foam filter + hose flush first.
