Hello,

I am afraid the screen inverter board of the unit is defective or the screen flex has loosed contact or worn out.

The job of the inverter is to give light/display on the screen of your printer. Since the display is failing, there is a possibility that the inverter is defective.

Also, it might be a bad screen flex. There is a flex connecting from the gps board to the screen. If this flex gets worn out, it can cause the screen not to display or fluctuate.

You need to disassemble the gpsr, check the screen part and see if the flex connected to the screen is in order. Otherwise, the inverter is defective.

The gps inverter is not an easy fix or DIY, you I would suggest you take the gps to a repairman if it happens that the flex is in order.

Regards.

Unfortunately this model doesn't have the Headphone jack/audio line-out in it.
There is no way to fit one either as it does not have the capability to have this external modification fitted.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information.
Thanks

Unit will not switch on is there a reset button

Welcome to Fixya.

Resetting the device will require the unit to be turned on.

Here's a quick checklist if your GPS is not turning on.
  • Check if the device is properly charged.
  • Check if the chargers are functioning properly or is not defective.
  • Replace the battery.
  • Press and hold the power button up to 15 seconds and see if it turns on.

To reset the device:
  • Power off the n?vi
  • Press and hold the bottom-right corner of the touchscreen
  • Power it on
  • A prompt will ask you "are you sure you want to delete all user data?"
Resetting the device will erase any save information, but not the map(s).

Thank you for using Fixya. Have a great day.

Slow and freezing in middle of jouney

The following are suggestions based on experience. Any, all or none might be causing your fault which will be difficult to diagnose precisely without diagnostic equipment.

1. You have set the level of mapping detail too high. The additional graphics load slows the processor down to a crawl.

2. You have added too many extras to your nuvi, such as points of interest, additional maps, photos, music, SD card. All of these use up memory and processing power. Plenty of other devices perform most of those tasks far better.

3. Your unit is overheating. There is a recall by Garmin at the moment for some units which have been suffering from batteries overheating.

4. You have the unit connected to another device via Bluetooth. Although Bluetooth slows the unit down a little, the problem is usually with the paired Bluetooth device. Try deactivating Bluetooth on the nuvi to see if it makes a difference.

You can try a full reset to factory specifications, but this will wipe all data (except for any Garmin Lock passcode you have activated) from your unit, and some folks have even reported that their maps get wiped.

If you want to try a full reset anyway, then first connect your unit via USB lead to your host pc and perform a full back-up. Make sure that the battery is fully charged and then disconnect from the USB lead and turn the unit off. The reset is done by starting with the nuvi switched off and then pressing and holding the bottom right corner of the screen and then, whilst still pressing the bottom corner, turning the unit on. A warning will appear asking if you want to go ahead and you proceed from there.

Afterwards, your backup can be used to restore essential data which you didn't want erased.

Once I conect my GPS to a usb cable, I get the

The screen your describe on your Garmin Nuvi is quite normal. It's the PC communication mode of the Nuvi. When disconnected from the PC it will automatically restart.

To update Nuvi software and maps - connect the Garmin to a PC / Mac using an USB cable. Then start your web browser (Internet Explorer / Firefox or similar) and go to MyGarmin.com.

To update the Garmin - MyGarmin.com will check if your webbrowser has been installed with the Garmin update plugin. If not it will say so and will lead you through the procedure to install the Garmin web browser plug-in.

After the web browser plugin is installed it will ask you for your Username and Password at MyGarmin.com. If not registered, then register yourself with the serial number of the Garmin Nuvi.

From here it's possible to update your Garmin Nuvi with new Nuvi software and maps using your username / password at MyGarmin.com

Can you upgrade garmin satnav for free

If you're referring to the maps, then no. Not legally.

Maps cost a huge amount of money to create and update, and nobody gives that info away for free. The only exception is if you bought the unit brand new and register it within 90 days of first use, then any map updates released in that time will be free. There are other resources which claim to offer free compatible maps, but they are as up to date and accurate as you may expect free maps to be, so probably not as good as the maps you already have.

If you just want to update the points of interest then there are many free resources, just search "nuvi poi" on your preferred internet search engine.

Hello,

Sorry to hear about your father.

You can reset the GPS to factory defaults which should clear the password. I wrote a tech article on how to perform a factory reset. You can view it by clicking here.

Toward the bottom of the article you will find directions on how to perform a hard reset of the device.

Let me know if you have any questions.

No you don't need to register it before it works. If it's not picking up satellites you should take it back to where you bought it and get them to exchange it.
