I insert a document, the Solutions Center menu displays on the screen. I click the Scan Document button, then an error displays: The application is currently in use or unavailable. Close any open programs and try again. There are no programs open.

This sort of thing can be down to the fact the settings for communication to the printer is separate for printing/faxing/scanning. So you will need to find the scanning device (will usually be called HP3050 regardless, or something along the lines of that) and make sure it's set to communicate through USB and no other means.

Do you have any OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software installed?
That is what you will need to extract the text information from the scanned document, which is simply a picture(photo) of your original.

Have a look here and decide yourself which solution suites you best.
(I would always try the free version first...;-)
It is also possible that your printer came with some kind of OCR software (often a scaled-down version of ReadIRIS) - check the CD's that came with your printer.

make sure you have the pdf format available in the computer,as all the option that the hp solution takes it takes it from the available file format in the computer.
install the adobe acrobat reader or some other pdf software....i will be interested in knowing if your printer gave you that option earlier
