With the front cover still open press "clear/back." it will ask if you are replacing the drum unit. press the up arrow to indicate yes. wait till it says accepted and then close front cover
Drums have a finite life on all laser printers. The 7040 has a drum life of 12,000 pages. This is a firmware setting built into the printer. The error light comes on before you reach that limit to give you time to replace it before the printer stops.
Replacing the drum is fairly easy. I would recommend Amazon.com as a good source of finding an inexpensive drum replacement for this printer. I have a brother 2170, and ordering a replacement drum through Amazon and saved a good bit over what I could have purchased it for locally.
You can reset the error light, and not replace the drum if all is printing fine. Open the front .door, remove your existing drum. Leaving the door open, put the original drum back in. Push the options button, and you will be asked "New Drum?" Select Yes and Accept, and the counter will reset. The error light should then go off.
