With the front cover still open press "clear/back." it will ask if you are replacing the drum unit. press the up arrow to indicate yes. wait till it says accepted and then close front cover

Drums have a finite life on all laser printers. The 7040 has a drum life of 12,000 pages. This is a firmware setting built into the printer. The error light comes on before you reach that limit to give you time to replace it before the printer stops.

Replacing the drum is fairly easy. I would recommend Amazon.com as a good source of finding an inexpensive drum replacement for this printer. I have a brother 2170, and ordering a replacement drum through Amazon and saved a good bit over what I could have purchased it for locally.

You can reset the error light, and not replace the drum if all is printing fine. Open the front .door, remove your existing drum. Leaving the door open, put the original drum back in. Push the options button, and you will be asked "New Drum?" Select Yes and Accept, and the counter will reset. The error light should then go off.

Do you have an actual error or is the drum stating end of life?
If you have real error, error code will be needed.
If your drum is stating end of life, then check ebay for reset chips. These chips will reset your life counter.
But at some point , the drum will fail. Also no not shine strong light on drum and do not work on drum in front of sunny window, sunlight will kill drum.

Hi,

you can't reset this error by software!!!

Most often there is a problem with charge leak in one of the drum units, or paper transfer unit. Try first with replacing most used PCU (maybe the Black one). If you have old and used drum unit try to use it again. Drum is the same for all colours. If you stop charge leaking, the error will dissapear after restart.
