The most likely reason is that the map has become unselected.

  1. Touch the wrench icon on the Where to/View map screen
  2. Touch Settings
  3. Touch Map
  4. Touch Map Info
  5. Select the checkbox next to the maps to be enabled on the device
If this doesn't solve the problem the maps may be locked.
To unlock the maps you'll need to register your satnav if you haven't already done so. To register connect your satnav to your computer and go to www.garmin.com Select your country and click MyGarmin. Then click Register Your Garmin Product. You'll have to create a username and password to register. Write them down and keep them safe as you'll need them again anytime you need to update your maps.

Retrieving your unlock codes:
  1. Log into your myGarmin account
  2. Select Manage Maps
  3. Select Details
  4. The unlock code is located under the Installed Maps.
Creating an unlock code file for PC:
  1. Plug your Garmin device into the USB port
  2. Double-Click on My Computer or Computer located on the desktop
  3. Right-Click on the Garmin or nuvi drive
  4. Click Explore
  5. Double-Click on the Garmin folder
  6. Right-Click in a blank space in this window
  7. Move your mouse over the word New
  8. Select Text Document
  9. Press Enter / Return on your keyboard
  10. Double-Click on the New Text Document. This will open the New Text Document in a window called Notepad
  11. Type the unlock code that is listed in the Manage Maps section of your myGarmin account in all upper-case letters with no spaces
  12. Select File
  13. Select Save As
  14. Change the Save As Type to All Files
  15. Type gmapprom.unl in all lower-case letters for the File name
  16. Select Save
  17. Close the Notepad window
  18. Delete the New Text Document file
  19. Disconnect the GPS device from your computer
Creating an unlock code file for Mac:
  1. Open the TextEdit application located in the Applications folder on the Mac HD
  2. Click Format
  3. Select Make Plain Text
  4. Type in the unlock code that you retrieved from your mygarmin account. The unlock code should be in all capital letters and with no dashes.
  5. Click Save As and name the file as gmapprom.unl (Note: Be sure to uncheck the box If no extension is provided, use .txt)
  6. Copy the gmapprom.unl file to the GARMIN folder on your device. (Note: Save the file directly to the Garmin mass-storage device if connected)
If you have only one map on your satnav you will need then to select it as described in paragraph 1 above.

If you have a second map on your satnav e.g. if the main map is USA and you have bought a second one of e.g. Europe which also needs to be unlocked;
  1. Plug your Garmin device into the USB port
  2. Double-Click on My Computer or Computer located on the desktop
  3. Right-Click on the Garmin or nuvi drive
  4. Click Explore
  5. Double-Click on the Garmin folder
  6. Right-Click in a blank space in this window
  7. Move your mouse over the word New
  8. Select Text Document
  9. Press Enter / Return on your keyboard
  10. Double-Click on the New Text Document. This will open the New Text Document in a window called Notepad
  11. Type the European unlock code that is listed in the Manage Maps section of your myGarmin account. This will need to be typed in all upper-case letters with no spaces
  12. Select File
  13. Select Save As
  14. Change the Save As Type to All Files
  15. Type gmapprom1.unl in all lower-case letters for the File name
  16. Select Save
  17. Close the Notepad window
  18. Delete the New Text Document file
  19. Disconnect the GPS device from your computer
When you have unlocked all maps you will then need to select them as described in Paragraph 1 above.

Update download for tom tom xxl 540s is too big for unit, lost all maps

Theres good news for you, you can get a SD card for your tomtom, and all you have to do is to install or download your maps on the SD card then fix it into your tomtom and you will be able to view your maps from there. For the lost maps, connect your tomtom to your computer, be sure to have your drivers software, then you select your tomtom form your computer, then you install all lost maps back on it by restoring all old maps. But for large downloads, download all new maps on a SD card. That should do the job.
Hope this information came in handy.

Lost the predownloaded Map

If you delete maps without backing them up, there's nothing you can do, but you can put maps back on by connecting to TomTom Home if they have been saved, otherwise you'll need to download and install new maps here

Lost my icn 520 map cd

Contact (I believe its Garmin for that model). I think you will have to buy another copy of their software. If your maps are more than a year old, they are due for an update anyways.

Updated to 2008 maps, now I lost my local roads and town maps

Turn on the Garmin. Look for the little wrench on the screen and select it. Now look for Map, select Map. Now look for Map Detail. Verify that it is set to "Normal" or Higher to get more map details.
