boot problem

hi there my laptop problem.you can hit f8 and get in the menu but when you try safe mode or last confi it comes up with \winnt\system32\config\system...please help

This being the case use the system restore CD and restore from it. When the laptop boots off the CD try using the repair function and run chkdisk /r this will cleanup the system files and restore missing or damaged files. If this does not fix the problem you will need to use the same disk and restore the operating system.
