Thought my nuvi was dead so I packed it away (I got it like 10 years ago). I just plugged it into my computer out of curiosity and it turned on. I tried to update it using Garmin Express. GE prompted me to restart the nuvi so it could finish updates. I tried that but now my garmin will only bring up the black GARMIN screen with "system software missing" below. I've tried to reset it by holding the power button on while holding middle of screen but that just shuts the nuvi off. I can't get it to respond to anything besides turing on and off. Don't know where to go from here...

The fix is actually pretty simple. Contact Garmin customer support they will send you the fix in an email. The file is a zip file that you unzip to your desk top then you just follow the instructions. I would recommend keeping the file on your desktop just in case it happens again. Once the system is restored then the updater works properly.

I had same problem. I called Garmin customer service who connected me to a computer rep. Garmin hooks with your computer that you have your Garmin plugged into.They can upload the proper software in no time at all.
The rep told me that after I updated my Garmin I might have turned off the unit before it completed updating the new software. You need to wait until the screen with "Where to?" appears.
It works great now. Prepare to wait on hold for a while. I waited just over an hour on Monday, their busiest day.

The system bootloader software got scrambled when you did the update. You can escalate it to a software tech and they may be able to give you the bootloader image file. If not, you'll have to get an RMA and send it back for a unit swap.

If the unit indicates "software/firmware missing", then you can only try to re-install firmware by running WebUpdater again. If it doesn't work, then the unit has to be sent to service to have it re-flashed.

Download and unzip the software, plug your garmin in the USB and start
the updater.exe program. It gets you started again. Later on you can
use the Webupdater to get possible newer software..
