SOURCE: Black Screen / Computer Stays in Standby Mode

Completely remove the battery and unplug the power cord for a few minutes. Reinsert battery and power up. You can also hit F8 when starting and see if you can boot into safe mode.

SOURCE: Screen goes black on my hp pavilion dv4000 notebook

Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop, power up the monitor first then boot up the laptop. The video data will switch to the monitor automatically, check if the monitor dislays a normal image and see if the image stays on the monitor.
Also press and hold the Fn key and press the F4 key, these keys toggle the video output between the LCD screen and the video port.
Test to see if this functions correctly.
Get back to me with the results of the tests.

SOURCE: Compaq Presario V2000 Screen went black

I know this is stupied but I had the same problem and it is fixed now - here goes techies - I called HP and of course they were giving me the story out of warrenty - i could pay to talk to them and all the other stuff. They had no clue and neither did I. However in the discussion i had to give them the model number "turned the thing over to find it" When i opened it and tried again it worked. I then moved it and had the same problem - once again turned it over and it worked. I have no clue what I did but I am going to take it in to have it looked at. Can someone tell me what happened?
