Washing the cyclone

The manual says don't use water however I have done this to reduce the smell of dog (picking up dog hair). Wondering if using water may actually lead to blocking of the small tubes in the cyclone? Can't see any other way to clean this area except washing. Any ideas? No screws to pull it apart! John
