I need an author program

I need an author program like word 7 or 5 or other. I work with wordpad and with it you cannot see the formats, A4 or know the end of a page, it is a mess, need to send a text and do not know how many pages it has!!!thanks  maria

Open Office is one of the best FREE programs for word processing. It can open many different types of documents like word and excel. You can download it from http://openoffice.org The support people there are friendly and it's a nice alternative to MS Office if you are on a budget since it is free.
