The £ character is part of the font character set which changes when u change character sets.
If you want to stay with the language settings you have you must determine where the £ is in the character set.
My £ is produced when I enter ALT + 156. The character is in the upper 128 of characters. Number 156 to be exact. For the British KBD it is mapped to a key to make it a single keystoke.
