Dchp problem. sounds like the modem is doing dhcp that's why it works plug in directly. disable the dhcp server in the router go to Network > DHCP Server > General in the router and disable it. only the modem or router can do dhcp.

If a LAN connected PC will not work while a wireless laptop is connected you need to go into advanced router setup, bandwidth management, and untick the three boxes labeled "active" to disable the band width management. Easy!

Disable the network adapters on the laptop via device manager and then enable again. If this does not work reinstall the network drivers and see whether it helps.
