I am having the same problem. Hopefully changing the ribbon will resolve this. I am going to try it.

It turns out the print head was dirty. I had to buy a cleaning kit for this printer. The kit comes with long cleaning cards that you manually push and pull back and forth over the cleaning head to buff it with a little rubbing alcohol. Been working ever since. I also found out from another source that you should never try to take this printer apart. You won't get it calibrated if you do.

Or maybe the long q-tips in the cleaning kit are what did the trick. Not sure.

SOURCE: empty/pause light on will not print

If solution #1 doesn't work, the theramal head may need to be replaced to solve the problem.

SOURCE: Zebra S4M prints one label then goes to flashing pause light.

most likely it is a printer driver issue. There's 2 drivers, one for 200dpi and one for 300dpi. Use the one for 200dpi. It could also be the label setting is incorrect. Try running a calibration.

SOURCE: Won't print.

First, make sure the printhead lever is pointed straight down. If it is then the sensor or the sensor interrupt is mispositioned. Remove the side cover and observe the opposite end of the rod the printhead lever is attached to. When the printhead is closed and locked the interuptor should be in the center of the U shaped sensor. This tells the printer that the printhead is closed and when you press pause the printer should advance several pages/labels.

SOURCE: Printer keeps pausing itself!!

By UI do you mean RUI (Remote User Interface)? Have you installed a network kit? If so did you upgrade firmware using SST? If not, you need to do this or printing won't work.

In service mode. Copier > Display > Version > PS/PCL there needs to be a number e.g. 30.06. If there is no number the copier does not have any print drivers on it and won't be able to print. You also need to have a N BOOT-ROM (included in network kit). There Should be a N next to the number for BOOT-ROM under Copier > Display > Version if a N BOOT-ROM is installed.
