    lcd shows ug61 error message. do I have to take this in or is there anything I can do to fix this??

Component failure, the DVD Disk Drive Control Board
(Part No. VEP79132).

Panasonic will not sell this individual part but packages it a module, called the RAM/Digital PCB Module
(Part No. RFKNES15P).

The manual refers to the U61 as being a recovery mode. Have you left it at U61 for a period of time while it tries to recover?
U61 ≥There was a power failure or the AC plug was disconnected while the unit was on. The unit is
carrying out its recovery process. This process restores the unit to normal operation. The unit is not
broken. Wait until the message disappears.
You could always try to force it into standby mode and back out again:
Press [í/I, POWER] on the main unit to switch the unit to standby.
Now press [í/I, POWER] on the main unit again to turn the unit on.
If that doesn't take care of it, everything thing I've found points toward a replacement of components inside the system by a repair service. Hopefully you are still under warranty!

Faulty or out of tollerance laser assembly. Could even be caused by the 5volt switchmode power supply failing.
Take it to a Panasonic Dealer for specialised repair.

Panasonic dmr-es35v dvd recorder

It can be repaired however I am not sure if the hard drive is available for that unit or not. I would contact panasonic to inquire as to the availability of a new drive.Sorry I couldnt help you more with it.
