If we are talking about a conair weight watrchers sclae i contacted manufacturer as this is quite the little eppidemic I have 3 of you with same problem. here is the response unfortunately i had contacted the canada location and not the us so i will provide the contact info for the us after the response. The unti is under a 10 year warrenty and usually warrenties are void if you mess with the unit so I highly reccomend you contact them first.:

Simply mail us your defective product or part with a detailed letter stating your name,mailing address, model , serial number, a brief description of the problem , a photocopy of your receipt and a cheque made out to Conair Canada for Conair products($5.00) or Cuisinart Canada for Cuisinart products ($10.00) for return shipping. Your product will be serviced and or inspected for possible warranty repair or replacement.
Please note that all replacements will take from 3-6 weeks and will not be replaced immediately. They must go through are technical department for testing.
Please also be advised that we do not have a reimbursement or refund policy.

ensure the battery contacts are clean, if they are corroded it wont work. You may have to buy a contact cleaning spray or brush to do it.

The same happened with me, but here is what I did and it worked. I took the new battery out and set the setting on the bottom of the scale to Stone, put the battery back in. Now when I put the battery back in I made sure the plus on the battery was the last part to go in, it faced the part inside the casing that needs to be pushed back when you take out the battery. Once it was in I put the setting back to LBs and it worked. Don't know how but I was just as frustrated and it worked.

well those are indeed batteries but may need de-soldering in order to have them replaced in which case you will have to get a soldering gun. hope that helps.
