This sometimes happens, if you have just turned off your phone this will more o rless always happen. Just give it a couple of minutes and if this keeps on happening....turn off the phone take off the back and take out the battery and sim card. Leave it for a minute or two and then put them back in and turn on your phone. Then go back onto messages, it will still be happening, leave it for a minute or two and it should be absouletly fine, the sim is just taking a long time to load thats all, there is not really much you can do! There a temporary solution. that is to download another messaging apps.
namely chomp sms for Android device. I'll believe yours is android.
Or you hard reset your device but at that cost of your data.
