That motherboard should have an onboard ethernet controller.
To load the driver, find the disk that came with the motherboard, it should have all of the necessary drivers.
If you can't find the disk, you should be able to search for the drivers on the manufacturers web site. Just enter: "ASUS P5L-VM 1394" in google, yahoo or whatever search engine you want.
You should find the manufacturers web page and a link to drivers.

Try uninstall your missing ethernet drive, and reinstall it.
if still doesn't show up mean it hardware malfunction.
buy another PCI ethernet card.

Remember to select your OS.
The file needs to be unpacked when downloaded.
