I have found out the problem was a faulty temperature probe in the EC1201 iron itself. I found this by comparing it's cold resistance compared with an EC1201A iron. The temp probe measured 22 Ohms, mine measured 50KOhms. When I connected a 22 Ohm resistor across my iron's temp probe terminals it heated up. So I need a new temp probe, probably unobtainable here in Saudi Arabia.
