The printer needs an IP address from dhcp server or in other words, the router. the switch just acts as a kind of repeater on network segment.
the printer has to be connected to router via ethernet cable or if it's wireless, connected to the router subnet. e.g, if your router has IP = 192.168.1.1, then your printer should have address = 192.168.1.100.
you don't assign the address, the router does. if your printer has a menu button, scroll through the menu and search for network related settings and print them to check what IP address was assigned. Then from computer you want to print from you have to "Add Network printer" and use the IP address it has been assigned to connect over the network.
