Had this same problem. Had 2 old Canon's that did this- figured it was just due to their age. I bought a brand new Sharp and it only printed symbols out of the box. It occurred to me that it might possibly be the ac/dc adaptor cord I was using. Due to not wanting to deal with the tangled wires behind my desk, I just used the same cord since it seemed to fit the new one. I plugged in the new cord from the Sharp box and all my problems were solved. The new cord even got the old Canon's printing!
Sounds like the printwheels are out of time. Sorta of major repairs. gears on side of printer have to be lined up in proper areas. there are small black arrows on the gears. Best bet is look at a working machine and try to line up. Machine may not be worth the time unless you jsut want to try it. Sharp uses the same printers in many different models.
