I had the same problem. It was plug ed into an extension cord as soon as i plug-ed it into the wall socket presto it works. I sure hope your problem is this easy.
E1 message means
"Fail to initialise stepping motor for zig zag"
Either something has jammed the mechanism (broken needle, thread etc) or the stepping motor has failed....if you cannot find obstruction easily, then this is one to send to the Janome service centre for assessment and repair
