I have a brand-new canon SD 800 IS.
When I plug it into the computer using the connection cable, and turn it on (on playback mode) the camera seems to respond the way it should: it makes a sound and the screen goes blank while the light on the "on/off" button remain.
But the computer doesn't do anything. No popup windows. When go to the Camera Window option from the Start menu, a popup message tells me to check my connection to the camera - which, as far as I can tell, seems perfectly normal.
Same thing when I try to access the camera from the software that came with it (Zoombrowser, EOS, Photostitch) - it won't recognize that there's a camera.
What should I do?
I have the same problem as the preceding two posters. I need to add though the fact that I WAS able to upload photographs previously. I added a printer (Lexmark X83) to the computer using a port at the back of the computer. When I had uploaded pictures previously- it was through an USB port in front of the computer.
Ever since the printer was added my computer ceased to recognize my camera.
I have detached the printer now- but still cannot upload.
Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa.

Wow! I'm surprised so many people have this problem. I've had the same problem for two years now, and it's been a huge pain in the neck because I haven't been able to put any photos on my computer. Does anyone know if there is any Canon help available over the phone?

The memory card was full, I cleared it and have been taking pictures with it since- but I have not tried to see if it is readable. I will try and get back to you.
Since I am so technologically challenged- may I ask you another question? Should I try another USB port on the same machine? And is there a certain type of USB port that is preferred (I mean a certain colour)?
Have you tried another USB port?
Is the memory card readable if you take to the drug store or plug it into a memory card reader?
