I had the same problem with my Olympus VN-5000. I found a solution, which appears to reformat the memory. Try to press the STOP and DISP/MENU buttons at the same time for about 2 seconds, and then the display should show "FOR". It will supposedly erase the whole memory, but will at least make the device usable again. I hope this solution works for your model!
Thank you for this.. I can verify this method does work for the vn-3100pc but just beware it formats the drive so you'll lose anything you had saved. I found this little recorder while cleaning out an estate in a box that was headed for trash, so I guess they couldn't figure it out and thought it was broken.. but with just a couple of fresh batteries and doing this it works like new again! Thanks again!
Mine done like you said it would do but then it went right back to ERR have you anybody seen a solution to that

My Olympus VN-3100 voice recorder has suddenly stopped working! When I switch it on it flashes CHK for a couple of minutes then says ERR. Help!
Have not had the device more than a week or two. Sadly it has about 40 notes I REALLY need to get off. Have you tried connecting to the PC?
Does the recorder need to be hooked up to a pc for this function to work?
