I am having a similar problem with my eos 100QD.
shutter opens, then stays open until I depress the shutter switch again.
Sometimes about half my photos are lost on a roll, but the other photos are fine (as would be expected from how the film is wound). This problem looks like it's caused by the shutter mechanism failing, a common problem with older camera and one that is often more expensive to repair than it is to replace the body.

I have the -exact- same problem with my eos rebel G11, have had it for a couple years and it has only been used maybe 3 times, as the batteries are lithium ion batteries I always take them out when the camera is not in use to protect the camera and the longevity of the battery. I took the camera on a recent vacation to yellowstone, and have had this exact problem, the camera powers on, shows a full charge, even winds the film that you put in, but when you take a picture the shutter closes, the battery flashes low and turns off. If you wind the film manually, the camera will power back on and show a full charge again. I'm assuming because the exposure did not complete that my entire roll of film is ruined, I have emailed canon support on this issue and will post a response if a helpful one comes along.
