unable to replace the back of the Fossil JR-9387 mens watch after replacing the batteries - can you tell me how to click it back into place?

This can be tricky. You may need to take to a store that has a watch press for replacing backs. Square watches are particularly tricky. I hope you were pushing the back on by pressing on sides of watch and not center as this may have warped it to not fit.
Best bet is a local repair.
