My system recognizes a hitachi hard drive when its switched on but when it gets to desktop it is recognized as a removable drive

Test the HD on a different computer, if you get same problem, then the
disk can be faulty. Backup your data ASAP, then replace either exernal
hard disk enclosure, or the hard disk drive, depending on what is
faulty.
If you get no problem on other computers, then the
system is causing the problem. In that case try doing a system restore
to a recent date before the problem started. If that does not work,
then you will have to reinstall the system.

Hello there DLBurkhart.
Here's your geek-steer ...
"...is emitting strange whining sounds every now and then ... Is this strange noise a sign of an impending problem?" == EVERY strange HDD noise is ALWAYS a sign of impending failure.
Peform a "Check Disk" on it ...
chkdsk DRIVE_LETTER /X /R
Good luck, and please do post back ...
Today's the best day of my life ... and NOW you're part of it!

SOURCE: Slave jumper settings for a 2.5 Hitachi DK23DA-20F hard drive
Hello.
For most IDE drives, if you REMOVE the jumper, the drive becomes a slave. But, you'll also need to change "drive 1" in your BIOS to recognize the second drive.
If you look on the drive, there should be a scheme as to the mode (Master, Slave,etc.).
Hope this helps.

Try attaching the Hitachi to a different USB port. After connecting to the USB port, go to Control Panel->Administrative tools->Computer Management->Disc Management. And see if it is visible here? If yes, then you can do what you want with it. If not, then I am sorry about the HDD. I think it is still under warranty. Please make use of the warranty and return the HDD and ask for a replacement. It being a USB HDD there is nothing wrong you could have done to it. In an internal HDD you could have connected the data cable the wrong way and have caused the damage, but not in a USB HDD. So the replacement process should be smaller and smoother.
