Hi,

You could isolate the problem if it is a monitor / video card problem by removing the cable (VGA/DVI) and see if the self test feature will have a distorted display

If Yes - Monitor Problem
If No - Video Card Problem or Software problem

If no, try to go to safe mode by tapping "F8" once you turn the computer on.
1. Select Safe mode (Check for video distortion)
2. Select Enable VGA Mode (Check for video distortion)

If one of the 2 is distorted the video card has a problem

If one of them doesn't show any distorted video it means its a driver/software problem.

Hope this helps.

Wide screen monitor distortion
Depending upon the screen resolution that has been set in Display, the image will be distorted on these large wide screen monitors.
To correct this distortion.
1. Create a large circle image using a draw program such as Paint (hold down the Shift key as you create the circle as it will draw a perfect circle).
2. Open Control Panel - Display - Settings tab and adjust the Screen resolution slider, increase or decrease the screen resolution then bring the circle image to the front and check the image, if the circle is still distorted then change the screen resolution and check the circle again until you are satisfied with the image of the circle.
3. When you are satisfied then click apply.

How to degausse gpsmap 172 gps

Hi Donnie,

Degaussing is not something that ever needs to be done on this device.

Degaussing is a term that I learned many years ago - it was a process performed periodically on early CRT (cathode ray tube) displays (such as a TV). Over time, CRT displays would build up magnetic charges that would cause the image to become distorted. A degaussing wand would be connected to an AC outlet and then brought very close to the display and gradually withdrawn. This would neutralize the magnetic charges on the display - and the resulting distortion. Years later, manufacturers incorporated a degaussing coil inside the display's cabinet that did the same job as the degaussing wand - thereby making the wand obsolete.

The GPSMap 172 has an LCD display that requires an electrical charge to create an image on the display. Unlike a traditional CRT type displays, an LCD (or LED for that matter) display is unaffected by magnets / magentism. Hold a magnet near a non-CRT type display to see for yourself. A magnet held near a CRT display however will distort the image more as it gets closer to the display. Caution: Doing this may cause PERMANENT damage to the CRT display. This is why many home theater speaker systems touted that fact that they were "magnetically shielded" so that they would not distort the images on the CRT display.

I hope this helps!

Distorted display/aspect HP w1907

This is a common problem with wide screen format.
The way I overcome this distortion is to open a drawing program and draw a circle, some programs require you to hold down the shift key to produce a perfect circle.
I then go to the Display Settings and adjust the screen resolution to get the best display that fills the screen and that gives me the perfect circle.
If this does not work you may need to download the latest video driver for your graphics card and then adjust the screen resolution..

Hi,i have a whistler 1773 laser-radar detector and it reads on the display DISTORT.i can't find anything in the owner's manual or on the website.can you help?thanks, angie

If compass is not calibrated correctly or if there is a strong magnetic field (dash or windshield mounted speakers), the unit will show incorrect direction or display "DISTORT". Re-calibrate the compass to correct the readings. Units that display "DISTORT" need to be moved farther away from the speakers or other magnetic field, then re-calibrate the compass.
