I remembered that I had to reset my ipod once before and since I had already uninstalled and reinstalled itunes I thought it must be the ipod. So, I pushed the enter and the play buttons at the same time for about 5 seconds to reset the ipod and when I connected it to itunes this time, it was working!!!

when connecting ipod 2gb to windows pc says it needs to be refomatted to window or restored with itune when restored with itune i get anerror 1418
