If this is one of the later-model Sunbeams, the housing has an upper half and a lower half. By removing the upper half, you can see the motor and the gear train. You will have to take out one of the beater gear posts and reinsert it to align properly. I suggest you look at both gear posts and check for worn or broken teeth. In which case, you will need to replace the bad part[s].
Older model Sunbeams have a gearbox housing that mounts onto the front of the motor housing. When you remove the gearbox housing, you will see the gear posts inside. Check for worn or broken teeth and replace as necessary. To insure proper alignment when reattaching the gearbox housing, align the two gears relative to each other then push the gearbox housing back onto the motor housing. The motor spindle will slightly turn both gearposts simutaneously during this process but will keep the proper alignment. You may have to repeat this process a number of times until you get it right.
how do you get to the gear box housing? ours does not have a top and a bottom. The top part of the mixer that can lean back seems to all be one unit. I can pry off the small black cone off the back and remove screws, and remove the 2 screws on bottom, but i still cant get inside it
but how do I get into the housing on the older beaters? ours doesnt have a top half that comes off, just one unit.. Ive removed as many screws as I can gain access to: 6, but still nothing comes apart
I haven't actually worked on that model, but here is my guess. On the front, see if you can remove an aluminum cover plate that is stuck on with rubber cement. Pry it off gently with the edge of a knife. Under that cover plate will be a screw that holds on the handle assembly. Behind the handle assembly will be the access to the beater gear posts. The gears themselves may be held in place with recessed screws that can be seen when they are rotated into position. Removing the screws will allow the beater posts to slide down, out of the gears. Then the gears can can be teased out. To install new gears, reverse the process. If Sunbeam did their job right, the beater posts will be properly aligned when installed with the gear screws aimed straight out towards you.

My mixer just shakes violently when the beaters are in. The bowl doesn't turn, it just shakes. Do you think that is due to the beaters being misaligned?
