Whenever i bring my tablet pen towards to tablet to use it, there's always an initial delayed response by the pen. It doesn't begin moving on the screen for a few seconds, and this happens like ever time i bring the pen too far from the tablet for too long and it's getting really annoying waiting for my pen to activate/ respond on the screen.
I had a similar problem with Vista which made the pen/cursor freeze just as the tip was placed on the tablet face.
The problem turned out to be a Vista setting.
I went to Start > Control Panel > Pen and Input Devices.
Then in the Pen Options tab highlight the "Press and Hold" pen action and then press the "Settings..." button. In the dialog box that opens uncheck the "Enable press and hold for right-clicking" check box. Hit "OK".
Worked for me.
Have the same problem on a Quad Core PC running Vista and an Intuos 3. Take the pen too far away from the tablet and I'd lose cursor control.
Rang Wacom Australia in Sydney and the tech said there had been a faulty batch of pens. I've sent my pen back for exchange and am waiting on a new one.
If true, it might explain why the problem is covering both Macs and PCs on a range of operating systems and versions. When I get my new pen, I'll report back.
Got my new replacement pen today and the problem has been solved. Works fine no matter how long I keep the pen away from the tablet, and works the instant the pen comes back into contact. So as far as I can see it's definitely a problem with faulty pens on the Intuos 3.
If you are having this problem, you need to contact Wacom and get your pen replaced. The Intuos pen is part no. ZP-501E-00A.
My only complication was the amount of time without a pen while I was waiting for a replacement. I'd forgotten how hard it was to work in Photoshop with a mouse!
Additionally, there is a diagnostic tool in the Wacom pen driver that will help identify the problem.
In Vista, go to Control Panel > Wacom Tablet Properties > About and click on "Diagnose".
You should see changing figures for X and Y Data and X and Y Tilt as the pen moves. When you take it away from the tablet, Proximity will change to "Out", and Device Name (Grip Pen), Device Type (Pen) and Device S/N (a number) will gray out.
Return it to the tablet, and they will appear again, and Proximity will change to "In". If it doesn't do this all the time as the pen approaches the tablet, there is a likely problem with the pen.

I fixed a problem of a delayed pen-down recognition (about 2 seconds delayed) by turning off the click sound in the System Preferences "Pen Tablet" pane. MacOS 10.5.6, Wacom 5.1.0-3.
I returned my Intuos 3 unit, replaced it. The new one works perfectly, it was a hardware defect for me.
For me, the Press and Hold option was already disabled, and just a few days ago the 3 second delay issue with my Wacom Intuos4 suddenly came up again. Wacom just released a new driver version a couple days ago, which happened to fixed the delay and saved me $60 on a new tablet pen:

If anyone else is stuck with this problem, I suggest updating your tablet driver first before resorting to replacing the hardware.
I've had the same problem with tablet, see above for my woe query this morning ...
since I had two tablets and two pens, I used the old pen with my new tablet and the problem of freezing and delaying is gone now ... it appears to me Wacom has been shifting their latest stuff with either wrong pens or glitch in their drivers .....
I'm running on Mac OSX 10.5 and just got my MacBook back from the Apple store for repairs-- and my wireless Wacom Tablet (CTE) was lagging about a second behind my movements. Like it was in slow motion.
I just went into applications, found the "Pen Tablet" folder, clicked the "Remove Pen Tablet" icon and reinstalled from the original installation CD. I was trying this over and over again before and it wasn't working-- but it was because I didn't remove the pen tablet software first.
Now it's moving around just fine.
If you are using Vista :
Open Theme Settings by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Theme.
On d you are there make sure you are not using
the Windows Classic Theme.
That did solve my problem

I have the exact same problem with my new Wacom Intuos3 DinA5 wide tablet. Can it be the pen is deffect? Or is there a solution via software?
I have that same problem and the latest driver didn't help. I have the same problem between my PC with WinXP and my Macbook with OS 10.5. It always delays with the pen, not with the mouse, and once I take the pen away for more than 3 seconds, it doesn't come back for more than a minute sometimes, though sometimes it only takes 10-20 seconds. Very random...
So, obviously hardware, not software, and pen-related, not the mouse. Anyone talked to Wacom customer service yet?

I am having the exact same problem. The pen does not respond immediately when i put it on the tablet. It will usually continue like this until i shake it around with little to no pressure on the tablet itself. When the mouse is on the pad i can move the cursor with the pen, however the moment the mouse is removed the tablet no longer responds to the pen. This delay happens every time i take the pen out of recognizable reach of the tablet and sometimes when i flip the pen upside down to erase. This is an extremely irritating problem as i never know how long i have to wait before the pen can be used again. A solution would be greatly appreciated.
I have a same problem 2 months after I bought wacom intous3 4x6. I contacted their technical support in Vancouver, but one of the technicians did try to help me out, but the problem still exist. But I can't reproduce the problem on my laptop, so I can't be sure this is wacom pen issue or vista compatibility issue.
I have this problem as well. Running Vista Home 4 gb ram and an Hp Pavilion dv6000. i have contacted tech support at Wacom and am awaiting a reply.
I am having the exact same problem. When I stop using the pen for long, or switch to the mouse, it often takes a few seconds for the pen to come back "alive". Sometimes it takes the better part of a minute! This is awful. So far Wacom has not been able to solve this for me...

Same problem with my Wacom Graphire 6x8 bluetooth, on an iMac 24". The delay does not exist with the mouse, only with the pen, and only if i click on an item: if i do not use the pen for 20 to 30 seconds, then if click on an item (moving a window, starting an application in the dock, or moving the cursor in a scrollbar...), then i have a one second delay... I use the last wacom driver.

Investigating a little more, i found the problem and the solution: it was the "click sound". With "click sound" unchecked, the problem disappears.

Yes a very similar problem,
at times when I am drawing in photoshop the cursor of my intuos3 stops (for a couple of seconds) follow the movement of my hands.
That happens when I am working on details (zoom in) of an image!
I have the same problem. If I use the mouse, it's fine. But I don't like mice, which is why I bought the tablet. As a designer under tight deadlines, this is most annoying. I'm running XP Pro here at work where the problem occurs. Doesn't happen at home on my Mac Leopard machine.

I used Intuous3 A5 tablet with my both my laptop and computer for 3.5 years and there's never been a problem. As a treat I bought myself A4 version of Intuos 3 and it's been a nightmare. Whilst using Photoshop my cursor freezes for a second and unless I move to the corner of a screen it's stuck .... I have reinstalled all possible drivers, scoured all the possible forums for answer, call the Wacom technical team where the woman tried to be helpful but failed ...Â
has anyone managed to get to bottom of this problem?

Realised I'd forgotten to mention my set up, MacPro 2.66 Quad, 7GB Ram with OS X10.5.2 ... thought that might help to fix the problem

So in the end, i just called the wacom guys and we figured that it was the pen's problem and that it had probably somehow been demangnitized and i had the pen replaced.
it wasn't the tablet. the tablet's fine.
i just ended up calling the wacom ppl and we determied it was the pen's fault since it kept on not working not only on other computers with the tablet but other tablets too. so wacom offered to replace it

I have exactly the same problem, no more no less. If you got your pen replaced, then I think I should try and get a replacement for mine too.

When I try and use the pen, it takes a few seconds (or more) to respond, and sometimes it won't respond until I wave the pen quickly over the tablet. For some reason, the eraser seems to be working just fine.
I just upgraded to the newest drivers, and the pen works perfectly once it finally responds, but I need it to respond immediately, as it slows down my work flow immensely.
I don't see how it could have become demagnetized, as the problem JUST started happening last night (upgraded drivers this morning.)
Also, it is not under warranty, but I need a way to fix it without having to buy a new pen. Will Wacom still replace it, even though my tablet is not under warranty? Please, if ANYONE knows how to fix this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.
nerosunero, your solution didn't work for me. my vista64bit with non-classic theme and latest wacom tablet driver still doesn't work flawlessly.
