Unplug the monitor from the computer,
it should display the diagnostic screen on monitor in color.
if not reconnect it and boot computer or attach to a running computer with some stuff on the screen,
get a bright light and shine on the screen at an angle do you see the stuff/desktop.if you do the lamp or power supply is bad.
if the monitor is lit and the lamps work but no diagnostics then the video cpu on the monitor is bad.

Normally that means the high voltage inverter that supplies power to the lamps is bad.
its a plug in module in the screen.
it requires taking the screen apart ,usually a easy job.
the only real way to verify is to measure the voltages before and after that module, is it getting 12vots does it have high voltage output.
or just order one on ebay or such.

Connecting to a computer and holding it at an angle with a bright light worked. I saw the "Dell Red, Green, Blue, White" box floating around.

I have a similar problem with my Dell TFT 19inch SE198WFP monitor.i am able to see self-test Feature check(STFC - Red,blue, Green). Monitor runs fine on linux(fedora -8) with screen resolution 1400X900 but not on windows :(..
Once is choose windows to boot, i can see the windows running for a while before the user prompt appears and then screen goes blank saying
"Auto detect(Analog Input)
cannot display This video mode
optimum resolution is 1400 X 900 60Hz "
This is same for Digital input.
I am connecting through VGA, have 64mb V Ram, P4, 1.6GHz,512Mb Ram(SD Ram).
Kindly please help me, all efforts went vain to reach tech support, really pathetic
