If I purchase a new one, does it have to be the exact same thing? Can I purchase a 120 gb instead? Also, whichever I purchase, will I still have to reload xp? And do you have any other suggestions for acquiring an xp disc if I have to do that other than through Gateway or Microsoft? I would really really appreciate an answer. Thanks.
I cant read your original question, but I believe you say your hard drive is failing? You need to get a second one (any size with XP) and a USB enclosure to transfer the files. You can try it over a WAN/LAN but that may be a little time consuming. WinXP has this feature bulit in and most hard drives come with a migration tool that assists in transferring OS and files and making it the primary boot drive. Operate and swap drives after migration is complete. Be careful with a gateway or Dell PC as it has a hidden partition that may not transfer if not told to do so.
You can also try removing one of the memory modules, as bad memory is a major cause of "no OS" or even "could not find pci.sys" problems, both cause XP to stop booting.

I went to start my computer and I got the error "media test failure check cable" "No OS found". I went through the steps in the bios settings to reset it, no luck. I took the drive out and reinserted and went through it all over again, still no OS found. I am thinking, my files are gone. I can only get to the black screen with the error message or to the bios settings.
