Installation of a basic GE in-wall timer

I have an outlet installed in the garage with an empty space next to it for another outlet or switch..
I hooked up outside lights that go on auto sensor to the back of this outlet.
I now bought a basic in wall timer to attach the outside lights to in the empty space but it came with black white and a red wire. I am confused as to which wires to connect to the timer wires.

    OK,
I have black and white wires powering an outlet.
I have black and white wires from outdoor lights connected directly to back of this outlet. The lights worked on auto light sensor. No problem so far.
I bought an in-wall timer. This timer has a black and white and a red wire. Im still a little confused as to how to wire the timer..

    white neutral conductor

    black 120v hot conductor

red switch leg of the timer...

put the load or light black to the red of the timer

    this is the 'switch leg"
