Been there, done that, too! The removable shredding mechanism (top) part of the shredder can easily be placed on the waste container backwards! Then the switch isn't turned on and the shredder won't work.
The switch is designed to signal that waste can is full.
Check and make sure the paper catch bin is locked into place.
IF the shredder doesn't see that the bin is in place, the shredder will appear dead for safetly reasons.
There is a possibility that the control board was cracked but the only way to check that, is to take it apart and check.
