External hard drive problem.

I have a portable western digital 500gb external hard drive and when I plug it into my computer, the computer doesn't take it. It doesn't give me any messages telling me about any problems it might have. It just "sits" there. Any solutions?

1. The usb cable could be defective

2. The usb port could be malfunctioning

3. The drive could be defective.
