Sounds like you have a boot password enabled. You didn't note that the system was asking for a password, tho.
For a boot password issue, power off, disconnect all cables, remove the battery and the bottom of the laptop. Look for a small, round silver battery (the CMOS battery) and remove it for 5 minutes. Reinsert and hopefully that will resolve your issue.
Some other thoughts:
You may have put the laptop in hibernate mode in error.
Try this first:
Disconnect the power cord and pull out the battery. Then press down the power
button for a least 30 seconds. Then reconnect the power
cord and start the laptop normally. This "hard reset" might fix your problem.
If not, remove the hard drive and reinsert.
Hope that one of these suggestions work.
I understand your reluctance in removing the hard drive. But, in laptops, it's generally very easy. Remove the battery once again. Generally, when you look at the bottom of your laptop, the hard drive is held by 2 small screws. Remove those screws and the hard drive slides out. Perhaps someone can help.

You did not mention if you have video signal when you turn the laptop on (even for 30 seconds). If you have video signal, check your adapter with a multimeter or use a previously checked adapter with your portable. If the AC adapter is bad it cannot sustain the power needs of your laptop or to charge the battery properly. So, your laptop turns off by itself (but you have video signal).
If you do not have video signal :
- remove the battery and plug the laptop. If there is no activity when you push on the power button (not even for a second) your motherboard is defective : it could be only the power jack, but it could be a bigger problem also.
- if it starts for a few seconds (but no video signal ) and then turn off by itself, there is a small chance to be a memory problem; check the memory as it follows:
- if you have 2 memory modules use only one at a time, the other one could be defective or
- check your memory with another laptop or
- use some known good memory etc.
If there is no activity with good memory that means the motherboard is defective (the power jack or something else). Could be expensive to be repaired or replaced. Verify if the laptop is in warranty and have it checked by a professional.

As you go to the doctor you need to describe very clear the symptoms (no lacks in words or letters) otherwise you'll lose a hand for a toothache. So, if you remove the battery you have to plug the laptop because it needs at least one source of power to turn on. If plugged it does not start, your motherboard or memory is defective (as described in my solution).

My computer came up with message "locking your computer" . I was using the mouse at the time. I have removed battery pack & pressed on-off switch but no activity at all ?? How do you unlock it & start up? Is there some keys that can be pressed?
Negative, could not see little round battery in the Battery Pack? Held down switch for 45 seconds then replaced battery pack & powered on-same response. I do not know about removing hard drive?
Rather not do that! I feel you cannot help me??? regards John
