I recent lost power only to find that my dell pc would not power up after the power had been restored. After doing some searching at work I read that it might be a problem with the usb ports. I unplugged all of my usb devices to inspect the ports. I did not see anything out of the ordinary.
I was at a loss when I decided to try to turn it on while everything was unplugged. The machine powered up as normal. I have lost power again since that first time and the same thing worked again. I found that if it will not power up, unplug it and disconnect all usb devices. After a few minutes try to turn it on again. I think that you will find that it will power up without the usb devices plugged in. Give it a try.
I am not a pc expert, but I believe that it is pretty obvious that dell has some electrical problem with their usb ports. The large number of people complaining of this problem is evidence enough for me. I have read that many have replaced the power supply and the machine will still fail to power up.
Does anybody know if this sounds like faulty usb ports or perhaps a motherboard problem?
Try removing the ram and place it back in, If that does not work your power supply has a short in it..Replace it

I already tried removing the ram. Is the power supply still bad even if I can get it to power up by jumping the green wire to a black wire. If I do that the fan starts and the Hard Drive powers up.
No, I have a new power supply on order and I am going to try that. If that doesn't work, I will assume the motherboard is the problem.
ok i own a dell 5100 desktop computer, and it wont turn on i think i messed up and flip the red switch on the power supply to 230 by accident and the green light is steadily lit on my motherboard i think that might be the source of my problem. what can i do from here what will be the next step to fixxing my computer?
