A red "X" means that the map file which has a serial number is not the same serial number as the GPS you are trying to run it on.
This is not garbage this is a copyright protection scheme that prevents people from sharing maps which cost money to produce.
So either 1) purchase a set of software that will code to your GPS or 2) create your own maps that do not require any codes to operate.

I understand what a red x means. The point is that it was bundled with the gps. Its a known issue to magellan and yet they did not fix it. I talked to support to work through this and finally got one to admit it was a known issue. And yet they still sell the Canada topo bundle and wait for the customer complaints instead of A) Sending the store a replacement for the sd card B) Recalling the units or C) providing online link to maps (which they have). They will send you a replacement card as it is there obligation to do so.
