I've run into the same problem and found that unplugging the power to the printer often resolves the problem.
Don't you love these generic and useless, uninformative error messages! All you can do at this point is replace it, even if it looks like it still has ink.
It may be defective, have a clogged jet, or other problems, but all we know is that when the computer asks it to print, it cannot, but does not say why, so you are asked to remove and check it.
There is a slight possibility that it is a printer malfunction. If the replacement cartridge responds the same way, then you may need to look into replacing the printer. They are not usually worth trying to fix. I'm very sorry.
You are most likely using a compatible cartridge as some compatibles cause this malfunction

I just replaced both of them which I later found out were extremely low, but it hasn't resolved the issue. The same error message still reads. Is there anything else I can try?
We have a brand new iPF 600 with BRAND NEW ink cartridges and we get the "check M" message every time we try to print. Will Canon replace these very expensive cartridges if they're defective? We're a public library on a tight budget and this is so frustrating!
