Hi I see this seems to be very common with dell!!! Anyway the problem I am having is this.
I have selected the cd drive as first boot device on IDE and the Hdd as drive 0 on sata.
They are recognised in the BIOS and in the correct boot order.
With the windows XP cd in the cd Rom reboot the computer and it says
cannot detect boot device press F1 to retry or F2 to enter setup utility.
I have tried everything.
If i press F12 to go to the boot meny it lists
1 USB or internal CD Rom Drive
2 Sata HDD
i select 1 , the cd drive whirls for a second and then says
selected boot device is not available. The cd works in other computers and i have tried three other cd drives in the computer.
This is a DELL DIMENSION 5150. i have looked at all the online manuals etc and see this seems to be common altough I cannot resolve this issue

Hi all, I also encounter with this problem in dell optiplex 360, I was trying to install Solaris 10 on the machine but it gives me an error selected boot device is not available, hit f1 to retry,... so on so forth. When I tried to to boot the disk with the XP installer, the machine boot successfully but when I reinserted the installer the same problem occur... what may be its cause? is it on the installer or on the disk? pls help..
I had the same issue with my dell dimension 2400. The issue I was having resulted in the connection to the drive was loose. Try taking off the side of the case, find the drives in question and reseating the plugins. My pc was quite a bit older though and i don't know if this will be your solution, but its worth a shot. You can even try installing a different cable and swapping to another power supply plug.

Dell Dimension 3000 accepts IDE hard drive. Any modern IDE drive should be fine

I resolved this issue by replacing the cd rom drive and the sata cables. hope this helps everbody else
