Making buttonholes for clothing you are constructing varies depending upon the make and model of sewing machine.

Some sewing machine have built-in buttonhole making features, with a buttonhole foot which can be attached. Some machines require a buttonholer attachment.

Without knowing the make and model of your sewing machine, it is a challenge to advise you properly. You can add the make and model of your sewing machine by choosing Comment and typing in the information.

One thing you need to keep in mind when making a buttonhole: The actual opening should be 1/8 -1/4 of an inch larger than the diameter of the button.

It could be that 8mm is the limit for the buttonhole foot. You can try making buttonholes manually with the sewing machine. Not really difficult. Just need to be careful marking the buttonhole and stitching. Recommend practicing on scrap fabric before trying it on the project.

Where is the buttonhole stitch?
Difficult to assist without more machine information. FWIW, a lot of older machines do not have a buttonhole stitch, but it is easy to do as long as the machine has straight stitch and zig-zag options.

It does not have 4 steps to do a button hole and will only stitch on the right hand side when I put it on the button stitch. How do I do the end pieces and the left hand side?
You can perform all the steps of a buttonhole without the buttonhole option (ask how sewists used to do it before sewing machines offered the buttonhole option). You'll just need a machine that can zig-zag.

Go to the following site regarding timing your machine. Are you placing a button in the buttonhole foot so the machine "knows" how long to make the buttonhole? If you have a button stop lever to the left of your needle bar, are you pulling it down and putting it in FRONT of the button stop so it can complete the rotation?

Automatic BUTTONHOLE making with 979:
  1. Carefully mark the position of buttonhole on your garment.
  2. Slide the button carrier and insert the button.
  3. Attach the buttonhole foot.
  4. Place the garment under the foot so that the needle pierces the fabric at the beginning of buttonhole.
  5. Lower the buttonhole lever and the presser foot lever.
  6. Push the buttonhole lever away from you.
  7. Start machine to complete entire buttonhole.
NOTE:
  • While making buttonholes, maintain an even sewing speed for uniform buttonholes.
  • When buttonholes are completed, be sure to push up the buttonhole lever as gar as it can go.

Buttonholes
First be sure to follow the steps described in the manual for attaching the buttonholer.

Second, check that the buttonhole lever is pushed because it returns to it's unpushed state after a buttonhole is completed and therefore it will stitch in the same spot.

Also, try adjusting the stitch length. I've found that I can't make buttonholes while on the satin stich setting ( that little rectangle) but if I move it just a bit towards 1 it will manage to make the right stitches.

Bernina Activa 131: buttonhole problem
There are TWO buttons on the machine that have the little u-turn on them. Look for the other one. That is the one that makes the second half of the buttonhole. Look in the owner's manual, it may tell you where it is on your machine. I spent a long time swearing at my machine before I figured out that the reverse is not the only button with the u-turn arrow. The manual is not clear on this. Why they use the same symbol twice is beyond me. Mine is on the front of the machine, down by the needle. Hope this helps.
