It has been some time since I have done this but if I remember correctly, the replacement glass comes with a special tool for the trim around the glass and instructions. I suggest calling a supplier, such as Restaurant Parts and More, Heritage Parts, or PartsTown and ask if this is still the case that the tool and instructions are included with the glass.

I have seen this happen when a hole develops near where the ignitor is mounted. The excess gass overheats the ignitor and burns it up. What I do in a case like that is slide a c clamp over the burner and cover the hole.

you are improving the voltage across the flame sensor . it probably is just short of being in range, failure to meet the proper micro amps the sensor produces will cause lock out and no ignition. sometimes you can simply adjust the sensor to hit flame better and it will work much better...

No keep the same spring but change the orifice and adjust the air mixture to get a clean burn
