I had a difficult time changing batteries in the remote for our Automatic Technology garage door remote model PTX-10V. Instructions say to remove the 2 screws HOWEVER they are the kind of screws that you cannot back out. Why anyone would have thought this was a good idea for a battery operated remote controller I cannot guess.
I finally dug up the right solutions and am sharing them here. Not my own answer, but I tried method #1 and it worked for me:
The PTX-10V uses specialized one-way security screws (often referred to as tamper-proof or unidirectional screws). Their heads are designed with sloped curved surfaces on the reverse side so that a screwdriver can only grip when turning clockwise (to tighten), but will completely slip out with absolutely zero grip when you try to turn it counterclockwise (to back it out).
Because the manufacturer's manual relies on generic instructions for the standard PTX series, it mistakenly tells you to just "remove the screws." To get past these one-way security screws specifically on your PTX-10V, you can use one of these direct methods:
Method 1: The Rubber Band Grip Trick
This is the easiest non-destructive method to try first. Place a wide, thick rubber band flat over the top of the security screw head. Press a precision flathead screwdriver (or a small Phillips head) firmly down through the rubber band and into the screw slot. Apply heavy downward pressure and turn counterclockwise. The rubber will mash into the sloped edges, filling the one-way gaps and giving you just enough friction to back the screw out.
Method 2: Modify the Screw Head
If the rubber band slips, you need to create a flat surface for a tool to bite into. Take a small hand file or a rotary tool (like a Dremel) with a thin cutting disc. Carefully cut a straight, deep horizontal slot right across the screw head. Once you have a straight slot, a standard flathead screwdriver will easily grip the screw and back it out.
Method 3: Use Locking Pliers
If the screw heads protrude slightly from the plastic casing rather than being deeply recessed: Clamp a pair of small, curved locking pliers (Vice-Grips) firmly around the outside perimeter of the screw head. Rotate the pliers counterclockwise to break the screw free and twist it out.
Moving Forward
Once you get these factory one-way screws out, toss them in the bin. You can replace them with any standard mini household Phillips screws of the same length, or simply rely on the plastic snap-tabs to hold the remote closed.
It is best practice to mention device, brand, and model number if possible. I am guessing this is a garage door opener.
