But somehow there is a significant delay before the picture is taken after the button is pressed. I have a two year old Canon Rebel XT and I'm very amateur. The delay is killing any action shots. What did I do to create this>

look a the settings currently on your camera
turn the knob to full auto and then go to the menu and do a full reset of the unit (see page 100 of manual)
then progressively re-add your custom settings
another option is that you have the shutter set to timer mode
change to 1/multi to repair
