Should I be concerned for my own health when dealing with a litter box? Can it cause any health issues?

There are some precautionary guidelines that you should follow to decrease the chances of incurring health problems. It starts with what you are feeding your cat. Stick to feeding your cat commercial cat food. Try to steer clear of feeding your cat raw foods. Cleaning your litter box regularly will also decrease the risk of contracting toxoplasmosis and e coli. If your immune system is compromised you should try to avoid cleaning the litter box and have someone else do it. If this is unavoidable, you should wear disposable gloves and wash your hands regularly.

Is it possible for my cat to be allergic to their litter?

Both cats and humans have the potential to be allergic to cat litter. If you think your cat is allergic to the litter the first thing you should do is change the type of litter you are using. You should try a non-clay based litter that does not create silica dust. You may also want to purchase a new litter box; perhaps something made of metal or ceramic.

Why is clumping cat litter better than clay litter?

Neither one is better than the other, they are based on preference. More people prefer to use clumping cat litter. Although clay litter is cheaper and absorbs well, clumping cat litter offers more advantages in my opinion. Clumping cat litter is much friendlier to the environment, seeing as you do not need to throw away the whole litter box every time your cat releases waste. It is easy to dispose of your cats waste products and helps to diminish the amount of odors.
