The speed control switch which is what the cord is attached to has gone bad. You can get these from grainger.com for the dayton line of fans.

SOURCE: I have a hunter ceiling fan. The motor works fine,

NO YOU DO NOT !! there is a little black box on inside of fan that controls the lights, its a ( watt governor ). just remove this black box and wire directly to the lights. problem should be fixed !! have a good day !! this is another goverment quick fix.

These are pretty standard parts. Try a Radio Shack (if they're still in business) or a home store's electrical department (Ace, Lowe's, Home Depot). Bring the old one with you.
