Did you purchase Office, or did you use the trial? A purchased boxed copy will have a code on a sticker somewhere in the box.
The code on your "hard drive"... do you mean the code on your computer's case? If so, that is your code for your copy of windows that is installed on it, and it won't work with Office.
If you already used the trial up, installing a new copy won't reset it, and the new code there won't work.

www.openoffice.org
This is FREE and you can open, create and save Microsoft Office files with it.
