  • Anonymous May 13, 2009

The problem with mines is that the R button is not physically stuck but it "electronically" is stuck. For example: I'm playing GTA Liberty City Stores and the R button is used for aiming while on foot, and hand brakes while in vehicle. Please help!

Hi Erikthug22,

You will have to open up your PSP to get to the contacts of the R button.

  1. REmove the battery
  2. Remove 4 screws from battery compartment
  3. Remove 1 screw from front edge under the PSP logo.
  4. Remove 2 screws from back on opposite side of battery.
  5. Lift the faceplate from the edge above the LCD slightly.
  6. Lift the front faceplate edge under the Home/Start button.
  7. You need to be very protective of the little screw hole that is under the PSP logo of the Faceplate..
  8. Do not touch the LCD screen if you can help it. If you do use a lint free cloth and windex glas cleaner to remove fingerprints and lint. Same thing for faceplate window.
  9. REmove the R button
  10. lift the rubber pad/frame behind the R button straight up.
  11. Clean the back of the rubber piece with a Q-tip and Rubbing alcohol.
  12. Clean the contact pad that is behind the rubber pad/frame.
  13. Press the rubber/fram piece back into place carefully.
  14. Put your R button back on.
  15. Be sure your LCD sreen and inside of faceplate window are clean.
  16. Refit the faceplate.
  17. Reinstall screws.

Thanks for these helpful tips. I had this problem with my L button being constantly pressed, and I couldn't navigate the home menu. Took the PSP apart, pealed apart the pad for the L button, cleaned off all the sticky tape that was full of dust etc, and now it works!

I just keep pushing it down rly hard or push it against my desk for a couple secongs then it works normly but dont press it down to hard or u will jam it.

also i want to try taking on the faceplate but i dont have the right screwdriver so wat else could i use as one instead of buying it because i dont have any other screws that small so i would only use it once :(

This solution worked a treat.

Make sure that you are out of warrenty though, as you have to peel a label off in the battery bay that voids your warrenty.

Also, if you are finding sony a pain, just be persistent, and insistent.

When i got my brand new PSP, it had three dead pixels in the middle of the screen. I rang sony who told me that my $300 purchase was not faulty and that they were not responsible. Needless to say i kept pushing the point with the guy on the phone, and demanded to speak to his manager.

I then got the response i wanted and they sent me an email with a bar code which i took to australia post and 1 week later i had a new PSP.

Keep up the good fight and thanks for the help

The rubber is on a small metal frame that is held in place by a black tab. You slide the frame out from the tab and then lift up.

This occurs sometimes when you get either dust or some other substance built up inside of the system under the button. If you spilled some sort of liquid on it that would definitely cause it.

Either way, you can open the system up and clean off the dust or sticky substance, but I would not recommend doing it yourself unless you are familiar with these devices. It is best to take it to a local computer or gaming console repair shop. I am sure they would not charge you much to fix it. If you feel that you would like to try it yourself then here is a link that will show you step-by-step(with pictures) how to take the system apart.
