sometimes it happens because of the server RESPONSE "BUSY".
and try cleaning your cookies and CACHE.
clean your temp FILES.
else ask you ISP to open all the ports.if not opened.

and check whether you firewall is blocking.
scan for viruses that restricting your browsing. You can also try a proxy site to check if it will show Google sites.

Not just Firefox! Found a solution at Microsoft.com:

Control Panel - Network Connection - Local Area Connection (Properties) - TCP/IP Properties

Set IP Address for "Preffered DNS Server" as 4.2.2.2 and for "Alternate DNS Server" as 4.2.2.3

SOURCE: Neither Internet Explorer or Firefox will connect

Open your Internet Explorer,
Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections "Tab" -> LAN Settings -> Proxy server, uncheck the box -> OK

Restart your Browsers ie IE or Firefox, you don't need the proxy server if your are a home users.
