I attached a usb external hard drive to my laptop so I could download all information. Now it says I cannot eject the usb because a program is using it. I must close the program before ejecting it. The only program I can see is the C drive. The external drive is now listed as in that drive. How do I get it out and eject?
SOURCE: Boot to USB?
most of the newer motherboards have an option to boot from usb, I have 2 1 laptop a Dell XPS 2010 will boot automaticly to USB if it is plugged in and has the option in the bios for boot seqence, and a desktop a dell XPS 720 it will alsi do the same, see if you can find a live copy of XP or the OS of your choise and you can boot from DVDR I have a copy of XP Lite Portable that boots from USB and runs fine

There is a small hole, usually near the eject button. Unbend a paper clip and carefully push the paper clip into the hole, try to keep it straight. drive should pop right out.

SOURCE: Acer aspire 4720z DVD drive not working
Hey,
it could be a dirty lens. here's a video on the cleaning, its annoyingly loud but shows how to clean the lens with rubbing alcohol.
might want to turn the volume down in advance:
its for a ps2 but the drive is basically the same, and you would clean the lens in the same way.
if this doesn't solve the problem, you would probably have to disassemble the drive completely and get it working properly and put it back together, might want to get the help of a pro for that.
Last option is to replace the dvd drive completely, it will definitely solve the problem, You can buy such a drive from few places, few come to mind, for example, www.ebay.com, www.pchub.com and www.acerparts.com
Let me know how that goes,
Thanks,
Ekse
